In our ancient culture, sycamore has always been a symbol as it blooms, ages and grows in the coldest and the most severe climates and challenges centuries, stands high and is a secure shelter for the ones in its huge shade. In all settlements of Anatolia, from the farthest villages to towns and from districts to cities, the sycamore has always been a tree preferred and grown because of these features.
Like an almighty sycamore, our seniors who have spent their lives productive, vigorous and giving confidence to the surrounding, seizing a goal seemed to be unattainable and exhausting a century and sailing to a new century have taught us that objectives could be real and hope should not be lost.
During their long lives, our centennial sycamores have made the responsible consumption, contenting with less, saving, paddling their own canoes, coping with difficulties, patience, determination, perseverance, tolerance, listening and keeping calm, solidarity, sharing, friendship and wisdom a way of behaviour and life style.
It has been planned to award “Centennial Sycamores” awards to our centenarians living in 7 different regions of our country who fit 100 years into their lives, at the 1st Council on of Old-Age to be organized on 20-22 February 2019 under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey.
